Pear Industry Development in Korea

South Korea's agricultural socialization service system has reached a fairly complete level, creating extremely favorable conditions for modern agriculture. In 1981, according to the revised "Agricultural Synergy Combination Law", the Korean Agricultural Association reorganized the three-level organization into a two-level organization with only unit combinations and the Central Committee, forming a highly autonomous and relatively complete organization system. Fruit production is a labor-intensive, capital-intensive, and technology-intensive industry. Being restricted by market rules, it has a low ability to resist economic risks. In order to protect the economic benefits of fruits in the fierce market competition, fruit production associations at all levels provide a full range of services from many links in the entire pear industry chain, including agricultural education, technical training, supply of production materials, agricultural credit supply and product purchase and sales.

Concentrating on commercialization of post-harvest pears and improve the added value of products

The commercialization level of Korean pears after harvest is quite developed, and modern commercialized processing plants have been established in the production center. Some farmers have also established small family workshop-type pear sorting and packaging workshops. During my stay in South Korea, the author visited the Luozhou horticultural products and pear-specific commercialized processing plant. The pears were cleaned, sorted, and packed in the factory, including the loading, unloading, transition, and storage of pears. The classification of pears is done automatically and mechanically, and a dedicated control platform is provided. The freshly-packaged pears must meet certain standards. All those that fail to meet the standards will be picked out for another processing. The quality inspection will be performed by professional quality inspectors.  Singo pear's brix level below 11.6% is not allowed.  The grade and price are determined according to the number of different pears in the package. The packaging is very elegant, and the name, variety, weight, number and grade of the producer are marked on the outside of the carton. And supervise the phone and the quality mark recognized by the national quality certification agency.

In the factory's raw material workshop, the bargaining fruit is first identified by bar code, and the name, variety, and phone number of the producer are marked for easy tracking and random inspection.

Agricultural product market system. Since the 1980s, the central government of South Korea has promoted the construction of a public agricultural product market system. In the major metropolises of the country, it has established a network system of agricultural products supplemented by public large-scale agricultural product wholesale markets as the mainstay of private and general legal wholesale markets.

Korean pears are mainly fresh, and a few pears are used to process pear juice, canned pears, pear wine, beverages, and pear jams. At the Korea Pear Research Institute, the author tasted the concentrated and concentrated pear juice. Very delicious. Korean pears are mainly sold domestically due to the higher cost of pears produced in South Korea.
